Wanted: Vanatru Symbol

I am occasionally frustrated by the lack of a single clear symbol for Vanatru suitable for a pendant. Heathenism in general is represented in jewelry by a Mjolnir (Hammer of Thor), a Valknot (more specific to Odinspeople in my circles), or occasionally an Ægishjálmr (Helm of Awe) . Other bindrunes and Viking-era art are popular, especially if they depict one of the gods, but they’re not just to represent Heathenry itself, they’re references to specific needs or dedications.

But the Valknot and Mjolnir both belong to the Aesir, not the Vanir. While amber and gold are both strongly associated with Freyja, they’re also just generally beloved of Heathens, and non-Heathens don’t necessarily recognize their presence as a symbol at all.

Perhaps the most appropriate symbol for the Vanir would be the knotwork boar some folks use, but that’s also used for Celtic stuff – not that I mind the mix, but it’s not a clear message to wear it.

There are pendants out there based on the classic Freyr statue and depictions of Freyja, but those tend to be worn by people dedicated specifically to the individual deity, rather than the Vanir as a group, or with a Vanatru focus.

I do have my own jewelry to honor the Vanir, but very little that a stranger could identify me as Vanatru by. This frustrates me when I go to do Jail Ministry as a Heathen Gythia, but feel wearing a Mjolnir pendant would be misrepresenting myself.

What would make a suitable symbol for Vanatru?

I agree with the boar symbol. A few days ago I decided to make a new “priesthood” necklace, and the vision I got was a boar. There are some very nice boar figurines that are made in the same way the gauls in continental Europe made them for their necklaces on kultofathena.com and at the wulflund project website. However, I was also thinking maybe a shoot of wheat would be very indicative of the Vanir.

The flame. Symbolizing the eternal burning fire.
Read Oera Linda. Very well as presented by Anthony Radford in the book From Goddess to King. Its available free as pdf. Nothing provokes christians as Freya, the free, therefore they all try to condemn this book as a hoax. Its not – its the genuine Vanatru.

I’m not familiar with it. I generally don’t ascribe to conspiracy theories without a lot more support, but I am happy to read regardless. While I can see a Flame, especially representing Gullveig, I don’t feel that a flame is specific enough to the Vanir, nor universal enough to all the Vanir, to be recognized as a Vanatru symbol. But that keeps being the problem, really. There may be a need for a specific design of such a universal symbol, where that particular depiction is what matters… -E-

Tempting. I do love trees. Yggdrasil is an excellent symbol for Heathenry in general.

But actual depictions of trees have even more of the same problem the knotwork boar has in terms of being ambiguous as a reference, and with even less to make it specifically for the Vanir.

Although several of the folks I know who have *Tattoos* for one or more of the Vanir have a tree as part of it.

  4. All I am coming up with are things tied to Freya specifically. I will keep thinking.

I have asked this in either The Troth or Hrafnar groups and received items for identifying with individual deities, such as a cat for Freyja or a Fish for Njordh. Which is to say, no one shared a unifying thought. I too want a symbol that represents a more Vanic Identified path, as Odin is really the only Aesir that I would say I have a close relationship with. A cornucopia comes to mind, but that also has other connotations. A wagon?
