Should I be sharing my personal gnosis more?
I just started a Tumblr, finally, and as I did a brief search for folks who post material on the Vanir, I quickly found myself overwhelmed. There really are quite a few people already posting about our gods. I’m reminded of names I’ve yet to study in sufficient depth or connect with spiritually… I need to learn more about, and hopefully connect with, Lytir, who seems to be the Vanic god of travel or divination, or maybe both, I don’t know.
I realize in all of this, that I am daunted.
First because I am irrationally territorial about Vanatru. I say “irrational” because I know quite well that there is really no good reason at all why I should be. I would admonish anyone else who allowed such feelings to affect their behavior towards other Vanatruar, so of course I admonish myself even more harshly.
But I also realize that, while I’ll post about politics, and sometimes about my spiritual experiences here in Modern Midgard (aka “the real world”), and more rarely, a bit of dream I had, I by and large don’t post about my personal Gnosis.
Some of that is that I expect it to be rejected, and the more deeply felt the inspirational experience was, the more it hurts to have it rejected. But a lot of it is that when I read other people’s gnosis, I as often as not find myself thinking “No, that’s clearly not right.”
I’m not rude enough to poke at people about it, because it’s no business of mine to tell someone else that their gnosis isn’t good enough for me. Their gnosis isn’t FOR me. So there’s nothing wrong with them having gnosis that doesn’t suit me.
But I apparently feel that there IS something wrong with me having gnosis that isn’t for everyone else. And perhaps more to the point, that there’s something very wrong with me having gnosis I can’t then turn around and prove (?!) is correct.
So I share what is true in my experience with other humans, I will tell the tale of dreams I had, and I may, when I have built up a decent argument, or when my ideas seem of little consequence, share bits of my gnosis here and there.
But the important stuff I’m holding onto tightly.
And maybe I shouldn’t be.
Would you, my readers, prefer I share my Gnosis more freely?
Would you accept them – not necessarily in the sense of taking them on, but in the sense of not treating me poorly when what I’ve shared doesn’t suit you – if I did?

Please do share (begs the lurker from the back corner of the room). I’m fairly recently called to this path and still very much trying to find my footing and place. I can absolutely relate to your hesitation to put UPG out there, but as a reader/seeker I see it as a really valuable resource…not so much in the sense of figuring out what’s real or true for me, but definitely for navigating the terrain and trying to identify like minds. Any instances of SPG, of course, are icing.

Please do! I have lore aplenty around, but I’m always interested in hearing and comparing UPG. Now that I’ve started to really get into the swing of the devotional polytheist life, and become personally devoted to Freyja it’s important to know how she and others have been interacting with folks.

I’ve been stalking Cara’s blog for a while – I think because of something that you reblogged from there. 😉

I say, a) share your gnosis! I think what polyeism *needs* right now is to find similar patterns between a variety of people’s gnosis, and that any happen until there are enough people sharing their experices. B) I, too, feel territorial about Freya, in particular, and it’s been a struggle accepting an incorporating other people’s sometimes (vastly different experiences). So doing the Facets of Freya ritual and talking to as many Freya-smacked people as I can has really helped to expand my knowledge of who She is, and therefore help to deepen my relationship with Her.

I am not Vanatru, but I m interested to learn about your personal practice. For me, gnoses that illuminate revelations or mysteries I don’t share or that don’t jive with mine is all part of practicing a faith with other people.
I’d be glad to follow the Tumblr blog if you provide the link.

The tumblr is the same name as here – EmberVoices – but I’m sharing much more casual stuff over there. Still would love to see you there 😀

I think you should share to the extent to which you’re comfortable. In my ideal world, no one would feel badly about having differing gnosis, discussing said gnosis, or keeping it close to their heart and private as they see fit.

Well, sharing to the extent I feel comfortable is what I HAVE been doing, but I’m considering pushing myself more.
One of my vows was to pass what the Vanir teach me on, after all…

Go on, do it. You’re careful about making clear distinctions between your sources and flagging your UPG. I don’t think anyone who’s actually reading what you wrote will mistake you sharing gnosis for stating objective facts.
As I see it, it’s less about who’s right and wrong, and more about being visible to people who are looking for what you’re offering. Sure, your gnosis on a particular point may disagree with five other people, but there may also be someone out there who got the same message and was feeling isolated because they weren’t seeing agreement, either.
I’m not talking about confirmation, necessarily. Just that you can’t find like minds if no one knows what your mind is like.

Very true.

I feel the same as you about sharing personal gnosis. It’s a difficult thing to put that out there when we know everyone experiences things differently. I always remind myself that the Gods are slightly different with each of Their followers, and sometimes that means some stories are going to be presented differently. That doesn’t make any version any less true, it just may not be true for me.
I say do it too! We need more people talking about their experiences and interactions. Make it more visible so that we can start truly seeing that there are a lot of different perspectives and things They want to share with us.

The funny thing is, it doesn’t bother me when the variations are historical, neighboring cultures, etc. only when it’s modern UPG *about the Vanir*. And that’s just ridiculous. I need to get over it. The mechanism is the same for divergent UPG now as it ever was.
Maybe being more visible with mine will help me move past that twitch.

I say do it. Might help other people verify their own, if not oh well. Everyone has their own experiences, and I like seeing other peoples.

True. I like seeing other peoples except when it makes me cringe? But the cringing is entirely my problem.
I suppose my fear is that other people won’t feel that way about their cringing, and I’ll end up bombarded with negative feedback. But y’all have always been pretty polite, actually, so that’s not actually a realistic fear so far, here.
Hmmm.

I’d love to read some of your gnosis. And no, I don’t judge. Like you said, personal gnosis is personal. We all have our own paths, and while sometimes we share similar experiences, other times we don’t. And that’s cool. SPG is awesome, but if our UPGs are different, that’s awesome, too. My vote is to share what you feel comfortable sharing. 🙂
